This painting is an ode of Krishna and one of the finest examples of the famous Pattachitra art form. It is a painting with many layers. At the heart of this classic piece, etched and painted on an old palm leaf scroll, is a scene from the ‘Raasleela’ of Lord Krishna. At the centre of the painting you can see Krishna in an amorous embrace with Radha. They are both seated on a lotus. Around this central image you have a series of fine paintings depicting the ‘Dashavatara’, the ten incarnations of Vishnu, which includes Krishna. Surrounding this are another series of paintings depicting scenes from the Raasleela Radha and the gopis or young ladies and the stories from the Raasleela.

This painting is an exquisite example of the ancient art of Pattachitra and is made by the National Award winning artist Niranjan Moharana. Finely etched out and then painted, this piece has taken nearly a year to make and is a one-of-a-kind collectors piece.

Made up of two words: ‘Patta’ meaning cloth and ‘Chitra’ meaning image, Pattachitra is an art form that emerged from Puri (Odisha) where images of the deities and their chronicles are painted on a piece of cloth or palm leaves.
